무엇이 으뜸가는 행복인지 말씀해주십시오.
2.어리석은 사람을 멀리하고 현명한 사람을 가까이하며 존경할 만한 사람을 존경하는 것,
이것이 으뜸가는 행복이라네.
3.적합한 곳에서 살고 일찍이 공덕을 쌓으며 스스로 바른 서원을 세우는 것,
이것이 으뜸가는 행복이라네.
4.많이 배우고 기술을 익히며 규범을 지키고 바른 말을 하는 것,
이것이 으뜸가는 행복이라네.
5.부모님을 잘 모시고 가족을 보살피며 자신의 처신을 바르게 하는 것,
이것이 으뜸가는 행복이라네.
6.널리 베풀고 이치에 맞게 살며 이웃을 사랑하고 비난받을 일을 하지 않는 것,
이것이 으뜸가는 행복이라네.
7.나쁜 짓을 멀리하고 술 마시는 것을 절제하며 가르침을 부지런히 실천하는 것,
이것이 으뜸가는 행복이라네.
8.존중하고 겸손하며 감사하고 만족할 줄 알아 알맞은 때에 가르침을 듣는 것,

여래의 설법에 귀 기울이기를!

밤낮으로 공양을 올리는
인간과 자손들에게 자애를 베풀기를!
잊지 말고 그들을 보호해 주기를!
3.이 세상과 저 세상, 그리고 천상에 있는
그 어떤 보배라도 여래에 비할 수 없어라.
부처님 안에 이 으뜸가는 보배 있으니
이러한 진실로 모두 행복하기를!
4.욕망과 번뇌를 부순 위없는 불사의 법을
석가족 성자가 삼매에 들어 성취하셨네.
그 법과 견줄 만한 것은 아무 것도 없어라.
가르침 안에 이 으뜸가는 보배 있으니

5.곧바로 결실을 얻는 청정한 삼매를

아무리 방일하더라도 여덟 번째 태어남은 없다네.

자애경-Mettasutta
1.수행(修行)의 길을 잘 알아
적정의 경지를 이루려는 이는
정직하고 진솔하고 능숙하며
온순하고 부드럽고 겸손해야 합니다.
2.만족할 줄 알아 많은 것을 구하지 않으며
분주하지 않고 생활이 간소하며
감각기관이 고요하고 안정되며
거만하거나 탐착하지 않아서
3.현명한 이들이 나무랄 일은
그 어떤 것도 하지 않습니다.
모든 존재들이 안락하고 평화롭고 행복하기를!
4.살아 있는 생명이면 그 어떤 것이든
움직이거나 움직이지 않거나
길거나 크거나 중간이거나, 짧거나 미세하거나 거칠거나
5.보이거나 보이지 않거나 가깝거나 멀거나,
이미 태어난 것이나 앞으로 태어날 것이나,
모든 존재들이 행복하기를!
6.서로 속이지 않고 얕보지 않으며,
어디에서나 누구에게나
분노 때문이든 증오 때문이든
남의 고통을 바라지 않기를!
7.마치 어머니가 하나밖에 없는 자식을
목숨으로 보호하듯, 모든 생명을 향해
한량없는 자애의 마음을 내기를!
8.온 세상에 대해 위로 아래로 옆으로
걸림 없이 원한 없이 적의 없이
무량한 자애의 마음을 닦기를!
9.서 있을 때나 걸을 때나
앉아서나 누워서나 깨어 있는 한
자애의 마음을 잊지 않는 것,
이것이 거룩한 삶입니다.
10.그릇된 견해에 빠지지 않고
계행과 바른 견해를 갖추어
감각적 욕망을 버리면
다시는 윤회의 모태에 들지 않으리!!!
행복경(Maṅgalasutta) 주석
○ 어리석은 자들(bālānaṁ): 바른견해를 갖추지 못한 자들, 자신의 행위로 자신과 타인에게 손해를 끼치는 자들을 말한다.
○ 이웃들(ñātakānaṁ): 원문에는 친지들인데 부처님 당시에는 친족들이 모여 살았지만, 지금은 핵가족들이 이웃과 모여 살기에 '이웃들'이라고 번역하였다.
